CALHOUN ACCEPTED AT GATTON ACADEMY!

congratulates Nolan Calhoun upon his acceptance to the
Gatton Academy.
Congratulations to Nolan Calhoun upon his recent acceptance into the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky.
The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky is the Commonwealth’s only state-supported, residential high school for students interested in pursuing advanced careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Instead of spending their junior and senior years in traditional high schools, Gatton’s 121 students take all their coursework through Western Kentucky University with regularly-enrolled college students. Upon completion of their high school career at Gatton, students will have earned as many as 60 college credit hours.
The Gatton Academy is designed to enable Kentucky’s exceptional young scientists and mathematicians to learn in an environment which offers advanced educational opportunities and prepares them for leadership roles in Kentucky. For the past two years, the Gatton Academy has been ranked as the #1 High School in the nation.
Students interested in attending Gatton apply during their sophomore year, and are selected based upon SAT or ACT scores, GPA, interest in STEM, responses to essay questions, interviews by Academy staff members, and recommendations from teachers and other individuals who can attest to the applicant’s desire and preparedness for the program. The application process is competitive, with only approximately 20% of applicants being accepted into the program.
Nolan is hopeful to pursue a career in medicine and feels this jumpstart at Gatton will be a tremendous opportunity. Nolan’s academic career in Grant County Schools has included a wide array of interests, honors, and service, including participation on the (local) Superintendent’s student advisory group, the Northern Kentucky Youth Advisory Board, and is one of 11 students to sit on a state advisory board with the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Terry Holliday. He has earned 3rd and 5th place respectively in the state Geography and History Bees, and has regularly earned various titles and awards in Academic and Governors Cup competitions. He has also served his community and fellow-students in a number of leadership positions including Teen Court, Student Council, class president his Freshman and Sophomore years, as well as offices in a variety of other clubs and organizations.
Nolan is the third student from Grant County High School to have been selected for the Gatton Academy since it opened in 2007. Other GCHS/Gatton Academy graduates include Reubin Cid and Madison Liford. Congratulations and continued best wishes to our past and future Gatton grads!
