When Carla Marston, music teacher at Mason-Corinth Elementary, received her copy of KMEA’s quarterly, state-wide magazine, the “Bluegrass Music News,” one of her students was on the cover, staring back at her!
Daniel Goderwis, a 4th grade student in Jennifer Caldwell’s class, had entered an art contest sponsored by the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) and had won top honors: the cover of their Fall, 2012, magazine.
The theme for the art work was to be “Music Lasts a Lifetime,” and students were free to interpret the theme as they pleased. For Daniel, this meant a self-portrait of himself, as he plays the guitar beneath a tree, while two cardinals merrily chirp overhead. The valley in the foreground and the mountains beyond seem a bit reminiscent of the final scene in Rodger and Hammerstein’s, “The Sound of Music,” as a strain of music proclaiming, “Music lasts a life-time!” floats in the air. It’s the kind of idyllic picture that awakens one’s appreciation of music and nature -- and taking the time to enjoy them both.
This is not the first time Daniel’s work has been published. Last year, his work made the inside of the same magazine, and he also placed third in the Junior Duck Stamp Art contest. He has been taking art lessons from local artist, Mary Lucas, for the last two years.
Mrs. Marston has certainly enjoyed seeing one of her students receive this recognition. “I’m just so proud of him!” she brags. “I can’t wait until February, when his art work will be on display at the annual KMEA conference. I’ll be telling everyone, 'That’s my student!'"
