MCE’s CECILIA REED WINS “RUNNER UP” IN STATE ART CONTEST

.

Miss Cecilia Reed, a fourth grader at Mason-Corinth Elementary, has won second-place honors in a state-wide art contest promoting Kentucky’s Farm to School program! In honor of this achievement, her artwork will appear in a calendar produced by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and distributed throughout the state. In addition to the publication of her work, Cecilia received a $25.00 cash award, and the Grant County Food Service department received Farm to School aprons for the food service staff.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture initiated the Farm to School program as a part of their commitment to Kentucky’s farmers and local communities. The goal is to bring high quality and fresh Kentucky Proud products to Kentucky’s children while at the same time bolstering the local economy. Grant County Schools has participated in the Farm to School program during the past two growing seasons. State-wide, participating school districts purchased more than $280,000 worth of locally grown produce during the 2011-2012 school year which was, in turn, served to more than 325,000 students. The Farm to School program allows kids to grow into healthier adults who are educated about local food production and who demand locally-grown, healthy, and high-quality products. This is another example of government, business, schools, and communities working together for the good of all.

Congratulations to Cecilia and to all who benefit from the Farm to School program.
