GRANT COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES REVISION OF BOUNDARIES FOR BOARD MEMBER REPRESENTATION

At a special-called Board meeting held Thursday, April 21, 2016, members of the Grant County Board of Education approved a revision to the boundaries representing the School Board Member districts.  The revision was made in accordance with KRS 160.210 which calls for County School Board Members to be elected from five separate divisions (districts) within the county, with the boundary lines being drawn by the local Board of Education in such a way as to make the divisions “as equal in population and containing integral voting precincts insofar as is practical”.

In Grant County, the Board Member boundaries had remained the same since 1971.  Major shifts in the population since that time warranted the change.

For simplicity in voting, and with the assistance of Grant County Clerk Tabitha Clemons, the new Board Member boundary lines are drawn to coincide with current voter precinct boundaries, meaning, except in instances of precincts shared by both Williamstown Independent and Grant County Schools, entire precincts are now represented by the same School Board Member.  The new divisions, though quite varied in geographical size, now each represent an almost identical number in population -- with each of the five new areas containing 4100 – 4400 citizens.

Attaining this balance required two major changes:  A) The Corinth and Mason districts (formerly Districts 1 & 2) were combined into one (now known as “District 1”), and B) the Crittenden district (District 5) was split into two.  The second Crittenden (area) district assumed the name, “District 2”.  These changes, together with some modifications to match school board member boundaries with voter precinct boundaries means the county is now divided primarily as follows:

DISTRICT 1:  Southern Grant County (All of Precincts 8, 9, 19; Parts of Precincts 1, 3).  Mrs. Charlotte Schmidt will complete her current term as representative for the new District 1.

“NEW” DISTRICT 2:  North-eastern Grant County - East of US 25, including Knoxville, Sherman, and Flingsville communities (All of Precincts 14, 15, 18; Part (most) of Precinct 4).  Mr. Jim Colson will complete his current term as the representative for the new District 2.

DISTRICT 3:  Central Grant County Including City of Dry Ridge, plus Eckler, Fairview and Falmouth Road areas (All of Precincts 5, 21, 23; Parts of Precincts 2, 20).  Dr. Alice Heeger-Hartman will complete her current term as representative for the new District 3.

DISTRICT 4:  North-western Grant County Including Four Corners, Folsom, Elliston, Jonesville, and Mt. Zion areas (All of Precincts 6, 7, 11, 13, 22).  Mr. Gene Nelson will complete his current term as the representative for the new District 4.

DISTRICT 5:  Crittenden area (All of Precincts 10, 16, 17).  Mrs. Debbie Rogers will complete her current term as the representative for the new District 5.

The changes will take effect immediately, and will be reflected in the school board elections due to take place in November, 2016.    Maps of the former and new districts may be viewed at:  www.grant.kyschools.us/AdmBoardofEd.aspx.

Dr. Ron Livingood wishes to express his appreciation to Tabitha Clemons, Grant County Clerk, for her guidance in this endeavor, and to the Grant County Board of Education for their cooperative spirit during this process.
