July 6 – 10, 2014, saw more than 7,000 student leaders, members, and advisers convened in San Antonio, Texas, for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference. Among that number were six students and two sponsors from Grant County High School.
The FCCLA National Leadership Conference provides opportunities for students and advisers to come together to listen to inspiring speakers, as well as to expand their leadership skills, sharpen their talents and explore possible career pathways. The theme of this year’s conference was “SOAR” and attendees were challenged to go beyond what was expected of them to make lasting, positive impressions in their families, schools and communities. Attendees also participated in a hands-on service project in which baby supplies were gathered and donated to an organization called “Operation Homefront,” which assists families of military service members.
The National FCCLA conference also offers over 30 events known as STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) in which students who have qualified through local and state events may compete. In STAR competitive events, students develop a project that typically includes research, project design and development, plus a presentation of knowledge. Over 4200 STAR Event participants competed in San Antonio. The six students attending the conference from Grant County High School had all qualified based upon their State FCCLA STAR event scores. Congratulations to the following students and their leaders for representing Grant County High School so well!
