LACEY EARNS SPOT AT PRESTIGIOUS GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS!

Congratulations to Cassidy Lacey! Cassidy, as a sophomore at Grant County High School, has been chosen to participate in the prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) during the Summer, 2014!

The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts has, for the past twenty-seven years, provided incredibly intense (and incredibly fun) opportunities and instruction in nine different art disciplines (Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, New Media, Visual Art, and Vocal Music) for Kentucky’s most talented incoming juniors and seniors.

For three solid weeks, the students live, breathe, eat and sleep the arts. It’s a thrilling, often life-changing experience, as they meet new friends explore their creativity, and discover new things about who they are and who they can be in the future.

Students audition for the privilege to attend, with only approximately 225 (of approximately 1800 applicants) being chosen each year. Those selected will receive tuition, room, board, and supplies at no cost to the student.

Cassidy earned her spot at GSA in the area of Musical Theatre after auditioning at Morehead University this past March. She was required to perform 32 measures of 2 songs, a monologue, and a dance routine. The songs and the monologue were of her choice and prepared in advance, but the dance routine was learned on-site.

Cassidy’s preparation and experience comes completely from taking advantage of opportunities provided in her home-town community of Grant County. She has taken lessons from her church pianist for eight years, plus participated in 6 musicals presented either by her church, Grant County Middle School, or Grant County High School. Most recently she played the very convincing Wicked Witch in the GCHS performance of “The Wizard of Oz!” She has also excelled in the GCMS and GCHS choral programs, and has been selected for All-State Choir for the past four years.

Cassidy will attend the Governor’s School for the Arts June 22 – July 12, 2014, at Centre College. Upon completing the program, she will be eligible for a host of scholarships and educational opportunities in all fields of study. At the College and Career Day this fall, representatives from as many as 70 colleges and universities from across the country audition and interview GSA graduates. Students will also be able to meet with representatives from such prestigious programs as the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, along with great programs from the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, Transylvania University, Morehead State University, Bellarmine University, Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, and many more. Additionally, twenty four colleges and universities welcome GSA alums with scholarships, just for having completed the program.

Cassidy joins a very short list of Grant County students ever accepted for GSA. Congratulations to her and those who have coached her along the way!
