Options for Juniors and Seniors
Co-Op (Work Based Learning) at Grant County High School
Students at Grant County High School can begin a Co-Op in their pathway during their Senior Year. The deadline to apply is August 1 and December 1.
Students wishing to participate in Work Based Learning (WBL), must meet ALL of the criteria:
- Student must be a full-time senior GCHS student on track for graduation.
- Students must meet the following academic/career benchmarks before being approved for the WBL program:
Be college and/or career-ready
- Student must have secured valid program-specific employment before being approved for WBL.
Student must not accrue 6 or more unexcused absences during the senior fall semester or the junior spring semester prior to enrollment in WBL.
- Students accruing more than 3 unexcused absences during the WBL semester may be required to forfeit his/her WBL opportunity and return to a regular GCHS schedule.
- Student must be passing all GCHS coursework in which he/she is enrolled during the semester of his/her WBL participation.
- Student's behavior record will be reviewed by the WBL committee. Excessive and/or severe behavior incidents could prevent students from being offered the privilege of WBL opportunities.
- Student must complete and fill out all required WBL paperwork including parent, instructor, principal, and employer signatures by August 1 for fall placement or by December 1 for spring placement.
-Student applying for WBL opportunities must successfullypass the Civics Test and an ILP update prior to being approved for WBL placement.
- Student understands that termination by the employer could also include being removed from the WBL program and could result in a failing grade for the course and a return to placement in coursework at GCHS.
The Co-Op Employer Agrees To:
- Take an active part in the training and supervision of the student while providing on-the-job instruction in accordance with the WBL agreement/plan.
- Assist the coordinator in evaluating the student's performance on the job by completing the evaluation form when required.
- Provide close supervision by an experienced and qualified person to avoid subjecting the student to unnecessary to unusual hazards.
- Notify the parent and the school immediately in case of accident, sickness or any other serious problems.
- Permit and expect the coordinator to visit periodically to discuss the progress of the student and to observe him/her on the job.
- Give the same consideration to the student as given to other employees in regard to safety, health, general employment conditions and other regulations to the business.
- Comply with all regulations prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disabilities, religion, marital status, or age.
- Secure a criminal background check for the individual who will serve as a worksite supervisor/mentor for the student participating in Work Based Learning. Background checks can be obtained by contacting Tyler Mullins at the GCHS Youth Services Center, 859-824-9739. Ext 4233
- Schedule the student during the school hours he or she is assigned Work Based Learning on their course schedule.

Dual Credit for Junior and Senior Students
Scholarships are available through KHEAA for Dual Credit. Check your KHEAA account often.
