Hello! My name is Rebecca Vanhoose, and I am proud to serve as the school counselor Sherman Elementary. This is my fifth year as the counselor at SES, and I feel incredibly fortunate to support our amazing students, families, and staff each day.
Before becoming a school counselor, I worked as a special education teacher, which gave me a strong foundation in understanding diverse student needs. I hold a bachelor's degree in elementary education and master's degrees in school counseling, special education, and education leadership (Director of Exceptional Children).
Outside of school, I love spending time with my husband, our twin foster children, and our dog. A few of my favorite things include the beach (any chance I get), music, and shopping.
I am passionate about helping students grow socially, emotionally, and academically-and I believe that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and seen at school.
Mission Statement:
To provide a supportive counseling program that advocates for all students, helping them feel valued, heard, and empowered. Through social, emotional, and academic support, we guide students to become confident and productive members of our community

STRIDE Expectations
At Sherman, we believe in teaching lifelong skills:
Self-Control
Team Player
Responsible
Integrity
Determination
Engaged
These expectations guide our student's behavior across all areas of the school. You'll see these themes reflected in our counseling lessons, group work, and daily interactions.
SEL Curriculum
This year, our school is excited to implement Navigate360’s Compass Curriculum, a comprehensive, research-backed social-emotional learning (SEL) program aligned with CASEL standards. Compass offers age‑appropriate, interactive lessons that help students develop skills like emotional awareness, healthy relationships, responsible decision-making, and stress management

Monthly Counseling Lessons
Each month, I provide classroom counseling lessons to all students at Sherman Elementary School. These lessons are designed around a monthly theme and are tailored to be developmentally appropriate for each grade level. All lessons align with our schoolwide expectations-STRIDE-as well as the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindset & Behaviors for student success. Below, you will find an outline for our monthly counseling themes for the school year.
