Hitting The Mark

The Grant County High School Archery program is gearing up for an exciting season as they kick off their campaign this weekend at the Grant County tournament. Head Coach Chad Leigh shares insights into the team’s goals and the opportunities ahead for the 2024-2025 season.

This year, the program is venturing into 3D archery competitions for the first time. While the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state tournament and the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) tournament primarily focus on bullseye events — where archers shoot from designated distances to accumulate points — 3D archery introduces a new dynamic. In 3D archery, competitors mimic hunting scenarios by shooting at animal-shaped targets, requiring them to assess terrain, adjust for various conditions, and execute precise shots under pressure.

Senior archer Raven Kelly is particularly thrilled about this new challenge. “I’m most excited about competing in the 3D tournaments for the first time! Learning to shoot at 3D targets pushes me to improve my skills. We must adapt to different environments, read terrain, and make the right shot under pressure,” Kelly shared.

Coach Leigh emphasizes the importance of focus and composure this season, adopting the motto “Slow Down!” to remind his athletes of the precision and calmness required in archery. Junior archer Nicolas Brewer reflected on the mental aspect of the sport, saying, “In sports, especially archery, having a short memory is so important. Many say to have the memory of a goldfish because once the arrow is released, nothing can be changed, and you must focus on the next shot and the next opportunity.”

Senior Lola Lower is focused on improving her performance and helping the team reach its full potential. “I think the group's strengths are that we are committed and work hard to improve our shooting,” she noted.

Coach Leigh hopes the community recognizes the dedication of his athletes. “We want people to see how much time and effort these kids put into their sport and their community. We’re aiming to qualify for the KHSAA State Championships and NASP Nationals this season,” he said. Looking ahead, Leigh also hopes to expand the team’s success on the global stage. “Last year, we sent two archers to Worlds. We’re working hard to continue improving and build on that momentum.”

As the season begins, Grant County’s archers are poised to make their mark, embracing new challenges and aiming for new heights in both bullseye and 3D archery competitions. Sophomore, Lydia Smith says, “I know my team loves our sport and we hope to represent GCHS well and show who we are and what we are here for.”
