Students Accepted into Prestigious Academies

Grant County High School is delighted to announce that two Sophomores, Hannah Herrmann and Delanie Schachere have been accepted into two advanced STEM programs in the state, Gatton Academy and Craft Academy.  
 
Located on the Morehead State University Campus, "The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is a dual-credit academy for academically exceptional Kentucky students. Craft Academy provides students with a postsecondary residential experience to complete their junior and senior years of high school by enrolling in college courses."
 
Gatton Academy is located on the Western Kentucky University campus, "The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky is Kentucky’s first residential 2-year STEM program for gifted and talented juniors and seniors.  Established in 2007, students at The Gatton Academy enroll as juniors and are full-time WKU students pursuing their interests in advanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematical careers."
 
Both girls are enrolled in advanced courses at Grant County High School (GCHS), Hannah is interested in engineering, currently taking mechanical engineering at the GCHS CTE center, "I love learning all that I can about anything." Hannah shares, "I love advanced math and engineering and this opportunity will provide me access to advanced college-level courses." Hannah is a member of the GCHS band and participates in the Marching band.  
 
Delanie is currently enrolled in advanced math classes at GCHS, "I'm excited to face new challenges on my own." says Delanie, "I'm really looking forward to learning and being on a college campus."  Delanie is a member of the GCHS choir and enjoys reading music.  
 
The application process is very involved.  Applicants must meet an ACT benchmark score in Math and Science, as well as have three letters of recommendation and complete five essays.  Each program only accepts 100 sophomores from across the state of Kentucky. “We are very proud of these two young ladies”, sophomore counselor, Tracy Childres shares, "They are exceptional students and will flourish during their time at Gatton and Craft Academies." Three other GCHS students have attended the Gatton Academy in previous years. Both Hannah and Delanie will attend the academies free of charge beginning in the fall of 2023.
