CTE Provides Experiences
Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, Health Science and Biomedical Science are always searching for ways to provide hands-on activities and presentations to their classes.   Last week, students involved in the Health Science and Biomedical Science classes heard a funny and engaging presentation from Mr. Terry Foster.  Mr. Foster is an RN, a clinical nurse specialist focusing on critical and emergency care.  Mr. Foster currently works at St. Elizabeth and provided real-world wisdom to our students thinking about a career in medicine.  Gateway nursing program was also present to talk to students about their nursing program and how students can work earning money while they are taking classes.

Another opportunity Grant County Health Science students have is participation in an internship with St. Elizabeth Hospital.  Students throughout Northern Kentucky compete for the prestigious internships.  Currently, three Grant County High School Seniors are involved in the internship, Caitlyn Grizzell, Emily Wilcoxen, and Emily Palmer.  These students earn high school credit while they are at their internship each day all year long.  Through the internship, the girls spend their day job shadowing various healthcare departments within St. Elizabeth Hospital in Grant County and Florence Hospital as well as physicians’ offices, Urgent Care in Crittenden, and other outpatient facilities.

Just this week, the girls had a unique experience of viewing a live surgery streamed into the St. Elizabeth Training Center.  The surgery was a robotic inguinal hernia repair. During the experience, they were also able to interact with the surgical team.  “It was an awesome experience” Senior, Caitlyn Grizzell shared after the viewing. Providing high-quality student experiences is always at the forefront of Health Science teacher Sherry Lawson and Biomedical teacher Amy Bolton’s mind.   We are so grateful for their passion and love for Grant County students, pushing them to achieve their career dreams.

A news coverage clip of the surgery can be viewed here.
