Real-World Experience in Action: GCHS HOSA Students Witness Live Robotic Surgery
Twenty Grant County High School HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) members recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step into the world of modern medicine. Through a partnership with St. Elizabeth Healthcare Training and Education Center (SETEC), students observed a live robotic-assisted surgery performed by Dr. Ryan Moon — a DaVinci Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure.
This immersive experience gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the precision, teamwork, and technology that define today’s healthcare field. During their visit, students had the opportunity to:
· Meet the surgical team — including the surgeon, anesthesiologist, scrub nurse, circulating nurse, and surgical assistant — and learn about each role and the education required.
· Explore cutting-edge operating room technology, seeing firsthand how robotics and innovation are transforming patient care.
· Engage directly with Dr. Moon, asking questions throughout the procedure to deepen their understanding of surgical practice.
· Interview a panel of hospital professionals from multiple disciplines such as Radiation Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Transitional Care, Medical Assisting, Behavioral Health, and Sports Medicine.
· Learn about pathways and opportunities for scholarships, grants, and work-study programs that support continued education and careers in healthcare.
This unforgettable experience not only brought classroom learning to life but also strengthened GCHS’s partnership with local healthcare professionals.
