COVID-19 COMMUNICATION #14

Dear GCS Families,

This COVID-19 Communication #14  covers action taken at the Board Work Session Thursday, April 18, 2020, as well as announcements made today (Monday, April 20, 2020) by Governor Beshear and KDE Interim Commissioner Kevin Brown in a conference call with Superintendents.  

ITEM #1:  REVISED GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GRANT COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020:   
In action taken by the Grant County Board of Education at the Work Session held Thursday, April 16, 2020, the Board approved amended Graduation Requirements for the Grant County High School Graduating Class of 2020. These changes were adopted by the Grant County Board of Education in accordance with guidance received from the Kentucky Department of Education and as the result of the nation-wide response to COVID-19, which closed schools to “in-person instruction” in the Commonwealth of Kentucky starting March 16, 2020. The revisions described below pertain only to the Graduating Class of 2020.
Seniors may graduate with the state minimum of 22 credits.
(This is a change from our Board requirement of 25.)

o Seniors will be expected to complete the required core classes as stated in Board Policy 08.113 (see below) plus 7 additional credits.

? 4 – ELA Credits

? 3 – Social Studies Credits

? 3 – Mathematics Credits

? 3 - Science Credits

? ½ PE Credit

? ½ Health Credit

? 1 Visual and Performing Arts Credit

ITEM #2:  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS IN GRANT COUNTY SCHOOLS

(FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020):   
In action taken by the Grant County Board of Education at the Work Session held Thursday, April 16, 2020, the Board approved the amended 2019-2020 academic calendar.  With the extra hours in our daily schedule and the provisions of SB 177 (which removed the 170-day requirement, but kept the 1062-hour requirement) the last day of school for Grant County Schools will be May 12.  (Provisions from the Governor may, however, change this date yet again.  More information to follow.)    

ITEM #3:  NO IN-PERSON CLASSES FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2019-2020:  
The Governor announced in his conference call on Monday, April 20, that there would be no in-person instruction nor activities  in Kentucky schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  (More information to follow.)
