Grant County High School is proud to announce that five of its students have been selected to participate in the prestigious Governor's Scholars Program (GSP) this summer.

Sarah Boden, Meagan Kinard, Cassidy Lacey, Madeline “Maddie” Morgan, and Allison “Allie” Schawe will represent Grant County High School in the five-week residential GSP program held at one of three college campuses throughout Kentucky.

The Governor’s Scholars Program was established in 1983, with the mission to “enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders and to create models of education excellence for teachers and students.” The program provides academic and personal growth through a strong liberal arts program, together with a full co-curricular and residential life experience.

The selection process is highly competitive – with the state GSP selection committee evaluating the ACT scores, grade point averages, community service, extra-curricular involvement, awards, leadership experiences, letters of recommendation, and writing samples of hundreds of applicants. Once selected, the students have the opportunity to participate in the program free-of-charge, and upon completion become eligible for a number of scholarship opportunities.

It is this promise for unique experiences, opportunities, and growth that motivates students to embrace the arduous application process. It is not unusual for a student to invest 40 hours or more in their application. Allie Schawe writes, “I applied for GSP not only for the scholarship opportunities, but to be able to experience a time in which I would be surrounded by peers like myself, and grow in my character, and experiences. While at GSP, I hope to gain social and academic skills, obtain new ideas and friends, and most importantly, have the time of my life!”

Meagan Kinard echoes her sentiment, stating, “I’m looking forward to attending the Governor’s Scholars Program because I know it will better prepare me for my future college experiences, and will provide the opportunity to meet amazing people. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the program and intend to make the most of every minute.”

In addition to social and academic growth, Sarah Boden hopes to attain personal growth as well. “I hope to learn a new sense of independence which will be critical for success in college. I also hope GSP will put to ease some fears I have about making the transition into college and adulthood.”

We trust the experience will be everything expected and more! Congratulations and best wishes to our 2015 Governors Scholars!
